Learning to surf

February 10, 2020 by Ed Guzman

Learning to surf can be challenging, but it does not have to be the hardest thing you have ever learned. Do it harder, or do it smarter. Most of us are choosing smarter over harder. Be good to yourself, friends, and family by taking a surf lesson!
Your surf instructor will guide you through all the basics to get you started with a solid foundation of skills.

Using the right equipment in gentle conditions, with professional guidance can make a huge difference in your progression as a surfer. Starting out with long, wide, buoyant, stable and safe soft-top surfboards are a must. A 4/3mm full-length wetsuit is necessary for staying warm and comfortable in the waters of the Central and Northern California coast. Learn to surf at a gentle beginner area like Cowell Beach in Santa Cruz. Other good places to learn to surf in Santa Cruz are Capitola and the inside section of Pleasure Point. Your surf instructor will know the best place to surf, which depends on tides and swell conditions
